Sending from the UK and abroad

Send a registered letter to Spain with proof of what it said

Recorded delivery to Spain shows that an envelope arrived. A Spanish burofax also shows what it said.

You can send recorded delivery to Spain from the UK, and it gives you a record that the envelope arrived. It doesn’t record what was inside. A Spanish burofax with certified content (certificación de contenido) and proof of delivery (acuse de recibo) proves both. You can send one online from abroad for €49.90, up to 3 pages, and we send it within 24 working hours.

In Spain, the burofax is what people send when they may need to show later what they said and when: to a landlord, a tenant, a company or a client. Cheaper non-Correos certified services exist too, including the Notificados option above.

Timing, delivery and if nobody is home

  • We send it within 24 working hours of payment, counting Spanish working days, whatever your time zone.
  • Correos delivers the same day if it accepts the burofax before 13:00 and the area has afternoon delivery; otherwise the next working day. Weekends and public holidays don’t count (Correos).
  • Correos makes two delivery attempts, leaves a notice, and keeps the letter at the post office for up to 30 days (Correos). The proof of delivery records whether it was delivered, refused or not collected.
  • Recipients must be in Spain. Your own address can be in any country.

The language of the letter

We send your text exactly as you write it and don’t translate it. The recipient and, if it comes to it, a Spanish court need to read it, so Spanish is the usual choice, on its own or first with your English version below. With ChatGPT you can describe the situation in English and get the Spanish text plus an English version to check.

A plain layout for a formal letter to Spain

If none of our situation templates fits, this skeleton gives a Spanish reader what they expect: who writes, about what, what you ask for, by when, and how to reach you abroad.

What to have ready

  • The recipient’s full name or company name and their address in Spain, with postcode.
  • Your current address, even if it’s abroad: it appears as the sender.
  • Any documents to attach, as PDF. They count as pages.
  • A card to pay and an email address for the receipt and tracking.

The templates and legal references on this page are general information, not an assessment of your case. We are a sending service, not a law firm, and we don’t check whether a letter is enough for what you want to achieve. You decide what to write and what to ask for. A legal professional can assess your case.

Questions about sending a registered letter to Spain

Can you send recorded delivery to Spain?

Yes. Royal Mail and other postal services sell tracked, signed-for international post that reaches Spain. It gives you a record that the envelope was delivered and who signed. It doesn’t record what was inside.

Is a burofax better than recorded delivery?

It proves more. Recorded delivery proves an envelope arrived. A burofax with certified content also proves the exact text, because Correos keeps and certifies a copy. Whether you need that depends on why you’re writing; if you may later need to show what you said and when, a burofax covers both.

Do I need a Spanish address, an NIE or Cl@ve?

Not with us. You don’t need an NIE (the identity number Spain gives foreign residents) or Cl@ve (the Spanish government’s online login). We ask for your name and address as the sender, which can be abroad, the recipient’s details in Spain, and an email for the receipt and tracking. Sending it yourself on correos.es means registering for a Mi Oficina account.

How long does it take?

We send it within 24 working hours of payment, counting Spanish working days. Correos delivers the same day if it accepts the burofax before 13:00 and the area has afternoon delivery; otherwise on the next working day.

Can you send a burofax to an address outside Spain?

No. We only send to addresses in Spain. Your own address can be anywhere.

Can I attach documents?

Yes, as part of the PDF. Attached pages count towards the total: €49.90 covers up to 3 pages, each extra page is €3.00, and the maximum is 10 pages.
